EndNote: Starting with EndNote

Creating an EndNote Library

The first step for starting with EndNote is creating an EndNote library.

  1. Open EndNote
  2. Select File > New
  3. Give your library a name

IMPORTANT: Two files are saved onto your computer when creating a library.enl and .data. The .enl file contains the references in your library, and the .data file contains additional information, such as PDFs for that library. If one of these files is deleted or moved to another location on your computer, your EndNote library might be unable to open, and you will lose information.

Got a new computer?

Getting a new computer soon? Here's how to get your EndNote library onto the new computer/laptop:

  1. From the old computer, click Sync Status on the left side and click the sync button.
  2. You'll be asked to register or log in to a free online EndNote account. (You can do that directly on a Browser by going to endnote.com and clicking EndNote Online in the top right corner).
  3. The Sync button will allow your online EndNote library to reflect your desktop without PDF files. If you make edits on references in the online library, hit sync again; those changes will reflect in the desktop library.
  4. Now, download the latest EndNote to your new computer using the library's instructions.
  5. Create a new library from the instructions box above.
  6. Now click the Sync button, log in with your online account credentials, and say yes to merging libraries when the question box pops up.
  7. Your desktop library will now reflect your online library without any PDFs you might have had on your other computer.
  8. Be sure to follow the directions on the "Setting Up 'Find Full Text' Tool page on this site to retrieve as many PDFs automatically as possible before attaching PDFs manually.
