Citing Online Resources

Template

Author(s). Book Title. Edition number. Publisher’s name; Copyright year or publication date. Accessed date. DOI or URL (verify that the link still works as close as possible to publication)

NOTE:

  • There is no period after the URL. 
  • Try to use a stable or permalink URL (avoid search result URLs, if you can).

AMA does not provide specific information for citing images, however you should always give an attribution line under images used in your work. Standard items to include in an attribution line are:

  • Title
  • Image source (book, website, etc.)
  • Source URL if possible
  • Date of Publication
  • License

General AMA Rules

Authors

  • List author names starting with the last name followed by first and middle initials, no periods.
    • If there are more than six authors, list the first three followed by et al.
    • Example: Jordan CJ, Cao J, Newman AH, et al.

Capitalization

Other

  • Retain the spelling, abbreviations, and style used in the original resource title.
  • Include inclusive page numbers (i.e., the start and end page numbers).
  • Reference the most specific part when possible (i.e., cite the chapter within the book).
