U.S. Health Statistics Online Resources

  • National Center for Health and Statistics (NCHS) is produced by the Center for Disease Control (CDC) and provides national population surveys, vital statistics, health care provider surveys, historical surveys, and more. Use the FastStats link to search statistics by topic.
  • MedlinePlus is produced by the National Library of Medicine (NLM) and compiles lists of statistics by age and gender.
  • Federal Interagency Forum on Aging Related Statistics encourages cross-national research and data collection on the aging population and shares information on the aging population through periodic publications and other means. The Forum is produced by the National Institute on Aging, the National Center for Health Statistics, the Census Bureau, and other agencies.
  • Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) collects state data about U.S. residents regarding their health-related risk behaviors, chronic health conditions, and use of preventive services. You can search their data by location or topic. BRFSS is sponsored by the CDC and other federal agencies.
  • State Health Facts is comprised of more than 800 health indicators and provides users with the ability to map, rank, trend, and download data. Produced by Kaiser Family Foundation, a non-profit organization, and provides up-to-date health data for all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and the United States. 
  • The U.S. Census Bureau is produced by the U.S. Department of Commerce. Their mission is to serve as the nation’s leading provider of quality data about its people and economy. Search data by geography, topic, year, and more. Check out their Quick Facts page to see information on population, health, education, and other topics.
  • Congressional District Health Dashboard provides actionable measures of health and its drivers calculated at the congressional district level, showing users how their district is doing on health outcomes, social and economic factors, and more.
  • County Health Rankings and Roadmap (CHR&R) publishes data about community health by county. CHR&R is a program of the University of Wisconsin Population Health Institute.
  • City Health Dashboard allows users to search data on more than 750 cities in the U.S. Supported by several sponsors, including the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.
  • Rural Data Explorer allows users to view data for metro and non-metro U.S. counties. Select from a wide range of data on health disparities, health workforce, demographics, and more. The Rural Health Information Hub is supported by the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS).
  • USDA Economic Research Service (ERS) provides agricultural data for U.S. locations. Browse by several data topics, such as crops, food choices, farm economy, animal products, farm practices, and more. The ERS anticipates trends and emerging issues in agriculture, food, the environment, and rural America and conducts economic research to inform and enhance public and private decision making. Follow this link to their State Fact Sheets and find information at a state-by-state level on various topics, including on population, income, poverty, food security, education, employment/unemployment, farm characteristics, farm financial indicators, top commodities, and agricultural exports.
  • U.S. Global Health Budget produced by Kaiser Family Foundation (KFF). The U.S. Government is the largest donor to global health in the world and includes support for both disease (HIV, tuberculosis, malaria, and neglected tropical diseases) and population (maternal and child health, nutrition, and family planning and reproductive health) as well as global health security. 
  • The Dartmouth Atlas Project uses Medicare and Medicaid data to provide information and analysis about national, regional, and local markets, as well as hospitals and their affiliated physicians.
  • Kids Count Data Center is a project of the Annie E. Casey Foundation and a premier source of data on children and families. Each year, the Foundation produces a comprehensive report that assesses child well-being in the United States.
  • American Hospital Association (AHA) Hospital Statistics - For more than seven decades, AHA Hospital Statistics™ has reported aggregate hospital data derived from the AHA Annual Survey and is the definitive source when doing trend analysis with data by bed size category , U.S. Census Divisions, States, and Metropolitan Statistical Areas (CBSAs). As the health care delivery system changes, so have the data tracked by the survey presented in this report.

  • California Data & Statistics Find out about Statistics and Reports produced by Department of Healthcare Services (DHCS) programs as well as links to other data related to DHCS programs.​ DHCS is actively adding data to the CalHHS Open Data Portal.
  • California Health Interview Survey (CHIS) is the nation's largest state health survey and a critical source of data on Californians as well as on the state's various racial and ethnic groups.
